Abstract

Incomplete study of formation conditions of debris flows in the Kargalinka River basin induced the off-design debris-flow discharge in the tail-water of the dam. It led to secondary formation of a debris flow, which caused great economic damage. The off-design debris-flow discharge occurrence is explained by the difference of velocities between coarse grains of the solid component and the liquid component (water and fine particles) of debrisflow mass, features of moving and confining forces during filling a storage reservoir with debris-flow mass, as well as the design of culverts in the dam.
