Abstract

The article reviewed an ecological state of the fishery in the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan. As drainless inland water body the Aral Sea existed due to the wash-offs of Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Its water was less salty that other seas water. Therefore, in the Aral Sea there mainly were freshwater fish and the productivity of it was quite high. In 50…60-s of the last century, when the level of the Aral Sea was at around 53 m. (according to the Baltic system – BS), the annual fish production reached 45…50 thousand tones. But after 60-s, the level of the Aral Sea quickly dropped, dried out more than half of its territory. The sea lost its fishery value and fishing ceased in delta lakes of Aral region.

In these difficult circumstances Kazakhstan built a Kokaral dam on the Berg sea strait and preserved the northern part of the Aral Sea. Today, through these activities the fish catch increases and successfully operates in the Aral Sea fishing.
